Door Trimmer Stud

Toenail the cripple stud to the top plate and the side of the header.

Door trimmer stud. Header beam above an opening in a wall door or window. When the opening is greater in width than the stud spacing and most windows are wider than 24 in. The rough framing around doors and windows includes king studs and trimmer studs. A header is a simple beam sized to support the load above the opening it spans.

Jack studs and king studs. Width of garage door opening standard widths are 8 9 10 12 14 16 17 and 18 height of the garage door opening standard residential heights are 7 7 6 8 header the header is ideally a minimum 12 wide micro laminated beam that spans the width of the garage door opening. Piece of plywood between the 2x8s so that the header width matches the 2 4 stud thickness. If the jack studs are cut down they probably need to be cut more than 3 4 inch total to accomodate shims to square the door in the opening.

Most new doors are 6 ft. For underlayment and 3 4 in. For the jamb 3 4 in. For finish flooring 3 8 in.

My shoulders touch both sides of a 24 doorway. My issue was squeezing in an interior bathroom door next to a vent pipe i really didn t want to relocate. The trimmer studs only run from the floor to the top of the door. They are also known as trimmer studs or simply trimmers and their function is to support the top of the door or window opening which is known as the header.

The framer attaches the jack studs on the sides of the king studs that face the opening. Openings over 6 require 2 on each side. These 2 marks represent the inner edges of the king studs. To indicate the position of the king studs measure 1 inches out from both of the outer marks on the ceiling.

In sawing out the excess. Install a cripple stud between the header and the top plate halfway between the king studs. Make a header by fitting two 2 x 8s around a 1 2 inch piece of plywood. These additional studs provide a nailing base beneath the drywall for attaching door and window casing.

I added a 1 2 in. At best the trimmer studs would have limited me to a special order 26 door. For wiggle room at the top of the door and the top of the trimmer the bottom of the header needs to be 82 5 8 in. Then a header must be inserted to carry the load of the interrupted stud s.

Large openings in the wall are made for windows and doors. If you take out only 1 2 inch on each side you have reduced the jack stud by 33. King stud full length stud along side of the trimmer or shoulder studs rough sill bottom of a window opening supports. Cut the header to fit between the king studs.

If this is done in place you are also stressing the remaining structure of studs header etc.
